I started SUPERLEGGERO in 2008 out of the most basic reason: need.
Living and riding in very cold towns, like Bolzano in the Dolomiti and in Zürich in the Swiss Alps, it was a basic necessity for me to wear something very warm, high performing and at the same time, something so chic, elegant and minimal to be worn on the way to the office, uni, grocery store or a special dinner date .
My team supported me with fantastic kit, but the problem was always to try and keep your head and ears warm. I noticed that of everything I put on my head or around my neck, nothing was at all breathable, everything was always too warm when climbing, and nothing wicked well-enough when descending. I revile this humidity which forms between your skin and hat. The same goes for the snoods against your face and neck; it’s even risky when your breath fails to vent outside, but instead ends up as fog on your glasses! So I decided to solve the problem myself. I thought «why hasn’t this been fixed before?»
This was the reason I started SUPERLEGGERO.
Wool and cashmere
We were the first to introduce in 2008 the term «snood» in the cycling world. Designed as a modern combination between a neck warmer and a beanie, our snood is an evolution of the classic «berretta». And we were the first to use the properties and qualities of the cashmere in a sportswear accessory. My idea was to create something new, minimal and modern, by all-natural materials, with a low environmental impact, made in Italy from the design process to the final product and packaging.
A beanie and snood very warm, yet still very breathable and very «leggero», easy to be folded and put in your bag or your pocket, unisex and passe-partout, to wear training each morning, but also have a touch of sporty elegance by late afternoon or evening. And because I’m not a «pro», deliberately kept simple and uncluttered by fancy logos or similar decorative elements. A perfect mix of tradition, aesthetic purity and chic minimalism, with a clean and contemporary mood.
So we focused on 2 ranges of temperature, ZERO for early winter and SOTTOZERO for those extra cold days. After many tests we decided to use a fantastic yarn, 70% extra fine Merino wool and 30% Cashmere, made in Italy by the best Italian manufacturer. We chose to dedicate the collection to the colours of the most iconic cycling races: the «celeste» of the the old jersey of the Nazionale, the «rosa» and «ciclamino» of the jerseys worn by the leader and the best scalatore at the Giro d‘Italia, the «yellow» of the jersey worn by the leader at the Paris-Nice, the beige of the cobbles, mud and dust of the Paris-Roubaix, the grey of the asphalt.
LEGGERA is part of the same project, natural, light and again more breathable materials, with minimalist designs, to wear for spring or early fall rides but at the same time a fashion accessory in summer. For the brand new LEGGERA collection we decided to use the super chic and fabulous «Mussola di seta» a 100% silk, warped, woven, milled and silkscreen-printed in Como (Lombardia, Italy – a true «terra di ciclismo») using the old traditional technique «stampa a quadro alla comasca». The collection is available in three sizes: CLASSICA (135x27 cm - 53,2x10,6 inch), CARRÉ (45x45 cm - 17,7x17,7 inch and 90x90 cm - 35,5x35,5 inch)and TUBOLARE (88x7 cm - 34,6x2,8 inch) all in the three iconic SUPERLEGGERO patterns, red «criterium», white «grimpeur» and «grand prix». In every LEGGERA you find a piece of cycling history.
With the MUSETTE Collection we have brought into the city and daily life MADAME and MADEMOISELLE, contemporary slants on the iconic cyclists’ bag, turning it into a convenient, refined, and elegant accessory. Made in Italy, of 100% heavyweight Italian cotton canvas, silkscreen-printed in Como (Lombardia, Italy – a true «terra di ciclismo») using the old traditional technique «stampa a quadro alla comasca» the collection is available in two sizes and three different patterns, red «criterium», white «grimpeur» and «grand prix». With every musette you carry a piece of cycling history.
Spring 2016, we introduced ALBERT a collection of three aprons in the «criterium» «grimpeur» and «grand prix» pattern.
Autumn 2016, we enriched the family of MUSETTE bags with MINI, a collection of three mini-bags, always in our iconic patterns.
