I confini naturali della penisola italiana mostrano che a Nord, l'arco alpino separa l'I. dalla comunità internazionale, relegandola al ruolo di gregario; mentre il resto del territorio, come un relitto alla deriva, è in balia delle onde del Mar Mediterraneo. Un tempo culla del diritto e dell'arte, patria del buon gusto e di tanto ingegno, l'I. si presenta oggi come terreno ostile alla creatività e alla voglia di progresso. 2. bot. Giardino incolto in cui le piante infestanti crescono senza regola, rendendo difficile la sopravvivenza delle varietà pregiate.
